Every year on 25th of May, something strange happens in the Voron3D printer Discord. The #clee-day-deals channel lights up near the top of the channel list. Vendors who normally spend their days arguing about TAP versus Beacon and which CAN bus board has the fewest design sins suddenly start posting coupon codes. Everyone seems to add “Clee” to their Discord handle and the Voron Design’s official social accounts post reminders. And if you ask anyone what’s actually being celebrated, you’ll get a knowing smile and very few straight answers.
Welcome to Clee Day — the Voron community’s most enthusiastically observed unofficial holiday, the origins of which we politely do not talk about in too much detail.
The “not-to-be-named user”
The story, as far as it gets told publicly, is roughly this: a certain Discord user once caused a memorable amount of chaos. The details vary depending on who’s recounting it and how many drinks deep they are, but the gist holds — enough chaos that the date stuck, the name became shorthand, and the community decided the best response was to lean into it rather than pretend it never happened.
This is, frankly, very on-brand for the Voron Discord. This is a community where the official welcome blurb invites you to come “build space shuttles with gardening tools,” where in-jokes calcify into proper nouns within weeks, and where the line between earnest engineering discussion and absurdist theatre is permanently smudged. Of course they turned a moderation incident into an annual celebration. What else were they going to do — not?
How a meme became a holiday
What’s genuinely interesting is how Clee Day has evolved from inside-baseball Discord silliness into something more substantial. Vendors caught on. The Voron community is, after all, an unusually concentrated market — people who’ll happily spend £2,000 sourcing parts, because the building is the point. If you sell extruders, CAN boards, hotends, or printed parts, the Voron Discord is where your customers live. So when the community invented its own pseudo-Black-Friday, the vendors didn’t need much convincing.
We’re guilty too
I’ll be honest: at onetwo3d we joined the party last year. Rebranded the whole site as “OneTwoCleeD” (briefly registered onetwocleed.co.uk and everything), threw 10% off everything for 24 hours. It was ridiculous. It was also one of our better trading days of the month. The Voron community responds to commitment to the bit.
The thing I appreciate most about Clee Day, though, isn’t the discounts. It’s that it’s unsanctioned. Nobody from Voron Design sat down in a meeting and said “we should create an annual sales event to drive engagement with our vendor ecosystem.” It bubbled up from the Discord, the way every good piece of internet culture does, and the official accounts just sort of… nodded and went along with it. That’s increasingly rare. Most online communities feel either over-managed or completely feral. Voron sits in this odd sweet spot where the chaos is real but the engineering is rigorous, and Clee Day is probably the purest expression of that.
So what do you actually do on Clee Day?
Honestly? You check the Discord. You see which vendors are running deals. You finally buy the part you’ve been telling yourself you don’t need (the kinematic mount, the spare hotend, the second toolhead board “for a future build”). You make a joke in chat that only fifteen people understand. You don’t ask too many questions about the origin story.
And then, having done your civic duty for another year, you go and print something.
