Mandala Rose Works FireThorn Flex Plate with ThornGrip Textured PEI
Exceptional adhesion. Lower bed temperatures. One remarkably versatile build surface.
The Mandala Rose Works FireThorn isn’t just another textured PEI build plate. Developed over almost three years of research, testing and experimentation, FireThorn combines a precision spring-steel flex plate with Mandala Rose Works’ proprietary ThornGrip textured PEI surface.
Designed to work with everything from everyday PLA and PETG through to demanding engineering materials, FireThorn offers excellent first-layer adhesion while operating at surprisingly low bed temperatures.
ThornGrip Textured PEI
Rather than using a conventional off-the-shelf PEI coating, Mandala Rose Works developed its own ThornGrip PEI formulation specifically for FireThorn.
The surface has a fine satin texture approximately comparable to 220-grit abrasive paper, giving the underside of printed parts an attractive, finely textured finish without the extremely coarse appearance produced by some conventional powder-coated PEI sheets.
Mandala Rose Works has tested FireThorn with a wide range of materials, including:
- PLA
- PETG
- ABS
- ASA
- Nylon
- Polypropylene (PP)
- PPA
- PPS
- Polycarbonate
- Various carbon-fibre reinforced filaments
For many materials, FireThorn provides excellent adhesion without requiring bed adhesive.
For engineering filaments, however, Mandala Rose Works highly recommends applying glue stick as a release agent. This isn’t necessarily required to make the filament stick – it helps prevent materials with particularly aggressive adhesion from bonding too strongly to and potentially damaging the PEI surface.
Cold-Plate-Like Performance
One of FireThorn’s most interesting characteristics is its ability to function much like a cold plate for lower-temperature materials.
Mandala Rose Works’ supplied FireThorn instructions recommend the following initial bed temperatures:
| Material | Suggested Initial Bed Temperature |
|---|---|
| PLA | 35°C |
| PETG | 50°C |
| ABS / ASA | 80–90°C |
| Nylon | 70–90°C, depending on blend |
These temperatures are intended as starting points. The optimum setting will vary with filament manufacturer, material formulation, printer, enclosure temperature and part geometry.
Being able to print materials such as PLA at substantially lower bed temperatures can reduce warm-up time and power consumption, and can be especially useful on enclosed printers where excessive chamber temperature can become an issue with PLA.
Premium Spring-Steel Flex Plate
FireThorn is manufactured using 0.65 mm 1075 spring steel, providing an excellent balance of rigidity and flexibility.
With the ThornGrip surface applied, the complete plate is approximately 0.85 mm thick.
Once a print and the plate have cooled, the plate can be removed from the magnetic bed and gently flexed to release the printed part.
Beacon & Cartographer Friendly
FireThorn is particularly interesting for printers equipped with Beacon or Cartographer eddy-current bed probes.
The material used for the FireThorn flex plate allows it to be used with magnetic beds while significantly reducing the individual magnet spikes that can otherwise appear in Beacon or Cartographer bed scans.
Mandala Rose Works reports that during its own FireThorn testing, magnetic-bed spikes were generally not visible when probing. In the small number of cases where spikes remained, older probe hardware or calibration may have been responsible.
This makes FireThorn an especially attractive option for modern Voron, RatRig and other high-performance printer builds using eddy-current bed sensing.
Bambu Lab Printers
When using a FireThorn plate on compatible Bambu Lab printers, the printer may not automatically recognise the third-party build plate.
You will therefore need to either:
- Apply an appropriate build-plate QR code sticker, or
- Disable build-plate detection and manually select a Textured Build Plate in the printer or slicer settings.
Always ensure that the selected build-plate profile and temperatures are appropriate for the filament being printed.
FireThorn Usage & Care Instructions
Correct preparation and handling will help maximise both adhesion and the service life of your FireThorn build surface.
Clean Before First Use
The FireThorn plate must be cleaned before its first use.
Mandala Rose Works recommends washing the plate using:
- Dawn dish soap and water
- A Scotch-Brite kitchen sponge or
- A bristle brush
This removes oils and contamination that can interfere with first-layer adhesion.
For ongoing use, Mandala suggests cleaning approximately every 10–20 prints, although the required frequency will depend on handling, filament and printing conditions.
Avoid touching the printable surface unnecessarily, as oils transferred from your fingers can reduce adhesion.
Dry Both Sides Thoroughly
After washing, both sides of the plate must be thoroughly dried before returning it to the printer.
Mandala Rose Works recommends either:
- Standing the plate vertically in a dish drainer until completely dry, or
- Placing it onto the printer and heating the bed to approximately 60°C until the upper surface is dry, then flipping the plate over to dry the other side.
Do not forget to dry both sides. Moisture trapped between the flex plate and magnetic bed should be avoided.
Engineering Filaments
FireThorn is suitable for engineering filaments, but some high-performance polymers can adhere extremely strongly to PEI.
For these materials, Mandala Rose Works highly recommends using glue stick as a release agent.
The purpose of the glue in this situation is to create a sacrificial barrier between the printed material and ThornGrip surface rather than to increase adhesion.
This is particularly important when experimenting with unfamiliar engineering materials or filament blends.
Allow the Plate to Cool Before Removing Prints
Do not attempt to remove a print from FireThorn while the plate is still hot.
Allow both the print and FireThorn plate to cool down before popping the part from the surface.
Once cooled, remove the flex plate from the magnetic bed and gently flex it to release the part.
Attempting to force a strongly adhered print from a hot plate may damage the ThornGrip surface.
Failure to allow the FireThorn to cool before removing a print could cause permanent damage to the build surface.
